4 ways to hack your memory | Lisa Genova | Big Think

4 ways to hack your memory, with Lisa Genova Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►► How memory works https://youtu.be/kwo2WxM87-g Self-testing is one good way to better remember information. Think of memory as a two-way street. If we only put information in, it is like traveling in only one direction. Recalling information requires us to go the other way. Spacing out studying is better than cramming. If you need seven hours to prepare for an exam that is one week from today, study one hour per day rather than all seven hours the night before. Context matters for memory recall. If you study while eating Sour Patch candy, do the same thing while taking the test. How going to college affects future generations of your family | Danette Howard | Big Think

How going to college affects future generations of your family, with Danette Howard Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►► Is Dropping Out of College Throwing Your Life Away? https://youtu.be/TfNO3zX6iak Right now, we're living in a society that divides citizens based on income, education level, and job titles. But in order to be a fair and just country that truly practices equal opportunity, we have to do something to address the racial education inequality so that everyone has access to the job and income they desire. That's why when Danette Howard was six years old, her mom decided to go back to school. Although her mom was in school for almost a decade, Danette notes that when you're the first to get a college degree in your family, it doesn't only change your life, but everyone that comes after you. It's not enough that just some of us have access to these credentials. Everyone should have the opportunity to determine the path that is best for him or her, just like Danette's mom did. That's why Danette serves alongside Lumina, a company working towards building a path that makes education accessible to everyone. Read the video transcript: https://ift.tt/32N764W This video was created in partnership with Lumina. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Danette Howard: Danette Gerald Howard, Ph.D. is senior vice president and chief policy officer at Lumina Foundation, the nation’s largest private foundation focused solely on increasing student access and success in postsecondary education. Howard oversees several of Lumina’s key strategies to increase Americans’ attainment of high-quality postsecondary degrees and credentials, including strategic work in both state and federal policy and efforts to leverage states as the drivers of credential attainment. She also leads the Foundation’s Equity First efforts to embed racial equity and justice in all aspects of Lumina’s strategic work and operations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Read more of our stories on college education: College education is still a class luxury in America. Social media addiction - how it changes your brain | Luke Burgis | Big Think

Social media addiction - how it changes your brain, with Luke Burgis Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►►https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►► How social media changes identity, personality, memory | Parker Posey | Big Think https://youtu.be/VHEfCSHZfs8 By definition, mimetic desire means that we're adopting another person's desire as our own, usually without even realizing that we're doing it. Social media has given us millions of mimetic models that we now have to contend with. Some people have gone from having 10 mimetic models to now having thousands, and we haven't quite come to grips as a culture with what that means for our mental and emotional health. All desire comes from us feeling like we lack something, which can bring us into a dangerous, vicious habit because there will always be another model to find. We have to choose our models wisely whether they are famous influencers across the globe or our closest friends. We also have to know when the model is inflaming us with the desire for something that's going to bring real fulfillment or whether it's going to bring a dopamine hit or allow us to fantasize about a life that we'll probably never have. All desires are modeled for us 24 hours a day, billions of them, and we need to understand the mimetic landscape of social media, or else we'll become completely controlled by it. Read the video transcript: https://ift.tt/3recfx5 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Luke Burgis: Luke Burgis is a veteran entrepreneur and author. He’s the Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship in Washington, DC, and the founder of Fourth Wall Ventures, an incubator that invests in people, art, and technology that contribute to a healthy human ecology. Luke studied business at NYU Stern before doing graduate work in philosophy and earning an S.T.B. in Theology from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. He’s the author of the book Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life, which popularized the work of cultural anthropologist René Girard. College is absurdly expensive. Can a radical new model change that? | Austen Allred | Big Think

College is absurdly expensive. Can a radical new model change that? With Austen Allred, Co-Founder & CEO of BloomTech. Since filming, Lambda School has rebranded to Bloom Institute of Technology. Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►► You Don't Need College to Get a College Education, with Salman Khan | Big Think https://youtu.be/uk4eGSzeTbM When Austen Allred was going to high school, nobody said anything other than: "Go to the best college you can, pay whatever it costs, study what you love. ‘Because as long as you graduate from college, you will be set for the rest of your life." After having been preached this for decades, Austen’s generation was one of the first to realize that that's fundamentally not true. Today, we're getting to a point where people are rethinking college education, and they're weighing the costs and the benefits. There are a number of schools that if you just look at the outcomes of the students that attend relative to the debt that those students incur, most students would have been better off not attending that school in the first place. This is what sparked Austen’s idea for Lambda School - a radical new model to college education. Lambda School is entirely online, and they train people to be software engineers and data scientists for no upfront tuition in exchange for a piece of what you'll make later. At Lambda School, you don't pay until you're hired. Since filming, Lambda School has rebranded to Bloom Institute of Technology. Read the video transcript: https://ift.tt/3kXRlhN ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Austen Allred: Austen Allred is the Co-Founder and CEO of Lambda School. A native of Springville, Utah, Austen’s start-up journey began in 2017 with him living in his two-door Civic while participating in Y Combinator, a San Francisco-based seed accelerator. This experience became the foundation of Lambda School’s rapid growth. Before founding Lambda School, Austen was the co-founder of media platform GrassWire. He co-authored the growth hacking textbook Secret Sauce, which became a best-seller and provided him the personal seed money to build Lambda. Austen’s disruptive ideas on the future of education, the labor market disconnect, and the opportunity of providing opportunity at-scale have been featured in: The Harvard Business Review, The Economist, WIRED, Fast Company, TechCrunch, The New York Times, among others. Austen is fluent in Russian and currently lives in San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and two kids. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Read more of our stories on alternative education and college: The problem with the push for more college degrees ►► https://ift.tt/3CxmHlu College education is still a class luxury in America. How to know what you really want | Luke Burgis | Big Think

How to know what you really want, with Luke Burgis Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►► The ugly psychology behind scapegoating | Luke Burgis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLa0zqShCcw There are two kinds of desire, thin and thick. Thick desires are like layers of rock that have been built up throughout the course of our lives. These are desires that can be shaped and cultivated through models like our parents and people that we admire as children. But at some level, they're related to the core of who we are. They can be related to perennial human truths: beauty, goodness, human dignity. Thin desires are highly mimetic (imitative) and ephemeral desires. They're the things that can be here today, gone tomorrow. Thin desires are subject to the winds of mimetic change, because they're not rooted in a layer of ourselves that's been built up over time. They are like a layer of leaves that's sitting on top of layers of rock. Those thin desires are blown away with a light gust of wind. A new model comes into our life; the old desires are gone. All of a sudden we want something else. In the stream of daily life, we're pushed and pulled in a million different directions. And if we don't extract ourselves and find time for recollection, we won't be able to listen to our lives, to listen to others, and to understand the way that our relationships and our desires are growing and emerging. We'll be surprised if five or ten years from now, we've pursued desires that have led us to a place that we really may not have wanted to go. Listening is critical to the transformation. The ugly psychology behind scapegoating, with Luke Burgis Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►► How to learn from failure and quit the blame game | Alisa Cohn | Big Think https://youtu.be/BMRq38ECmFc Did you know that our desires are not entirely our own? Desires are imitated from the first moment we are born. Our desires form from what our parents, friends, and significant others want in life. Now placed in a group, large or small, these imitative desires are even more powerful. These transferred desires within a group do create cohesion, but they're also the heart of where scapegoats are born. A scapegoat is someone outside of your group who also stands out from the social norm. The group then uses these scapegoats to transfer blame and negative emotions because they do not share the desires of the group. This blame, negative emotion, or fundamental truth is something the group does not want to acknowledge internally, so the blame is transferred to the scapegoat. In an instant, the problems of the group are gone because of the transfer of blame onto the scapegoat. Since scapegoats are identified as the root cause of the problem, they create a sense of relief, healing, and even protection for the group. Devil’s Advocate: Why worry about fascism? | Jason Stanley | Big Think

Devil’s Advocate: Why worry about fascism? with Jason Stanley Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next: ►► The 10 tactics of fascism https://youtu.be/CpCKkWMbmXU Fascism is a very particular ideological structure. The first pillar is the Mythic Past. Then there's Propaganda. Anti-intellectualism. Unreality. Hierarchy. Victimhood. Law and order. Sexual anxiety. Sodom and Gomorrah. And then finally, Arbeit macht frei- 'work shall make you free.' Each of these elements taken in and of itself, is not fascist. You can think about these individual elements in isolation. When it comes to these fascist tactics, people often ask, "Why do you need to worry about it. There's lots of tactics people use to win power. Why worry about these in particular?" Jason Stanley’s response is to say that fascist politics wears down democracy. Even if it doesn't result in a fascist regime, it creates the conditions for itself. Fascist politics, it's a politics of fear. So even if we don't get a fascist regime in the end, we destroy the basis of democracy. It's a kind of communication that makes a case for a goal, bypassing reason. Propaganda is a method to urge you to mobilize towards something while concealing from you things that you reasonably should think, should consider. The word propaganda by itself is neither good nor bad because we talk of abolitionist propaganda. We talk about the propaganda that people use in social movements. Martin Luther King Jr. talked about the need for propaganda because you need to get people to reconsider their racist assumptions. The goal of propaganda is to connect neutral words to other things. Propaganda will always be here. Our words always have these associations, any word I have. The goal is to have lots of different ways of living and lots of different ways of thinking and to recognize that we're not a threat to each other. The 3 ‘demons’ that haunted legendary scientists | Jimena Canales | Big Think

The 3 ‘demons’ that haunted legendary scientists, with Jimena Canales Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►► Why It's So Hard for Scientists to Believe in God? https://youtu.be/pINptKQYviQ If one opens any dictionary and you go to the entry of demon, one of the entries refers to the scientific demons. Descartes' demons, Laplace's demon, Maxwell's demon, they're not considered to be real when they're first mentioned, they're considered to be possibly real. They're trying to find a hole in theories. What they are, in the most literal sense, are little creatures that are concocted by scientists. When they're confronted with something that they don't really understand, these creatures that we have always thought of as little entities that can bend or break the laws of nature continue to be very useful and very common ways of thinking in advancing our knowledge and understanding of the natural world. These demons share similar characteristics to those other demons in the past, like Beelzebub and Lucifer. They can break the laws of nature, they're not necessarily evil, but they create power imbalances. They can be helpful or they can be mischievous to science. How to help kids traumatized by violence? | Great Question | Bessel van der Kolk | Big Think

How to help kids traumatized by violence?, with Bessel van der Kolk Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►► 6 ways to heal trauma without medication, from the author of “The Body Keeps the Score” https://youtu.be/ZoZT8-HqI64 People usually think about the military when they talk about trauma. But for every soldier who gets PTSD in a war zone, there's at least 30 children who get traumatized at home. The big question continues to be how do you help kids who have been exposed to enormous amounts of violence? How do you help these kids get a sense of self, a sense of agency, so they can make a life for themselves where they can learn, acquire skills, acquire competencies, and become full-fledged human beings? Bessel van der Kolk’s greatest dream is that in grades K through 12, kids get taught weekly about self-regulation - what kinds can do to calm themselves down and orient themselves. To aid in healing childhood trauma, every school in America would ideally be taught the following: reading, writing, arithmetic, and self-regulation. Read the video transcript: https://ift.tt/3GvJYHv ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Bessel van der Kolk: Bessel van der Kolk is a psychiatrist noted for his research in the area of post-traumatic stress since the 1970s. The 10 tactics of fascism | Jason Stanley | Big Think

The 10 tactics of fascism, with Jason Stanley Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►►"Never Again?" How fascism hijacks democracies over and over https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye4jKSNHhms Fascism is a cult of the leader, who promises national restoration in the face of supposed humiliation by immigrants, leftists, liberals, minorities, homosexuals, women, in the face of what the fascist leader says is a takeover of the country's media, cultural institutions, schools by these forces. Fascist movements typically, though not invariably, rest on an urban/rural divide. The cities are where there's decadence, where the elites congregate, where there's immigrants, and where there's criminality. Each of these individuals alone is not in and of itself fascist, but you have to worry when they're all grouped together, seeing the other as less than. Those moments are the times when societies need to worry about fascism. How to rewire your brain after trauma | Explain It Like I’m Smart | Big Think

How to rewire your brain after trauma | Explain It Like I’m Smart, with Bessel van der Kolk Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►►https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►► 6 ways to heal trauma without medication, from the author of “The Body Keeps the Score” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoZT8-HqI64 Have you ever wondered what happens to the traumatized brain when a soldier comes back from war? Often what's seen is that with each deployment, the frontal lobe becomes slower. This means that veterans cannot pay attention to what is in front of them, making it hard to engage in day-to-day life. Yet when a soldier has exposure to frightening events, such as a loud and sudden sound, their frontal lobe comes online. At the end of the day, when someone is traumatized and not experiencing danger, the brain doesn't function. But when the same person senses danger, the brain has been wired to act as a specialist in dealing with danger. This is where modern technology, such as quantitative EEGs, comes into play. An EEG is essentially a brain mapping system that can show you the active wiring of the brain. When someone is getting an EEG, this technology will measure the brainwaves at the back of their brain - the section of the brain that is set to expect danger. If the EEG picks up fast brain waves that resemble trauma, what we can do is rewire the brain. Whenever a traumatized person makes quiet, relaxed, and calm waves in their brain, they’ll get a reward. With this technology, we now can shape the brain to have a different configuration and different wiring, so it's no longer set to expect danger, but it's set to be open to new experiences. This is called Neural feedback. Feel first, think second: is our brain really cut out for the modern world? | Big Think

Feel first, think second: is our brain really cut out for the modern world? , with Paul Bloom, Dan Ariely, Daniel Dennett and more Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink Up next ►► A Simple Mind Trick Will Help You Think More Rationally | Big Think https://youtu.be/UyOGZk7WbIk The brain's job is not to pass a math test, get a promotion at work, or win a Nobel Prize. Our brain's only job is to make sure we survive today, and that we live to see another. Our brain' system worked well for us when humanity's only job was to hunt for food and fight for survival. But enter into the modern-day, our brain is not working so well as we have to rationalize problems like genetically modified foods and climate change. This is something we have to accept about our minds and better understand how our brain works in order to better avoid pitfalls in the future. In the coming years, because of modern technology, we will be able to better identify weaknesses in our rationality and thought patterns. Once we flag these weaknesses, we can make changes to our thinking patterns so that our brains have the tools to make us more rational decision-makers. So, how do we start thinking more rationally in the 21st century? Experts tell us that we will have to think from an outsider's perspective. To better adapt our fight or flight brains to the modern-day, we will have to step outside of our emotions, reframe our thoughts, and see things from a new perspective. What would school be like if it was invented today? | Sal Khan | Big Think

What would school be like if it was invented today? with Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ►► https://www.youtube.com/c/bigthink/videos Up next ►► If America’s education system is outdated, how can we evolve? | Derrell Bradford https://youtu.be/3btnmg30eks Our current form of education is almost 200 years old. What should schools of the future look like? When COVID-19 emerged and school districts began to move to remote learning, the ability to access tutoring — be it peer tutoring, extra time with teachers, or small-group tutoring — became even more difficult. Schoolhouse.world puts the focus on a different aspect of remote learning. Where traditional online education offerings focus on pre-recorded lessons, courses, and practice sessions, schoolhouse.world is designed to provide real time feedback via peer tutoring and small group sessions. The organization now boasts over 3,000 learners across more than 100 countries, with hundreds of online tutoring volunteers leading teaching classes and courses. Currently, those courses focus on math — from pre-algebra to calculus — as well as SAT prep, Indian Exams, and review sessions for AP exams. Sal Khan, of Khan Academy and now Schoolhouse.world, says real-time online learning is where our dated education system is heading, a destiny accelerated by COVID-19. While internet access is not yet available to everyone equally, Khan believes we are getting to a place where it soon will be.
