The ultimate test of understanding (The Feynman Technique) | Marvin Liyanage

Although there are valid critiques of Richard Feynman, few dispute his scientific contributions and even less his ability to explain complex topics masterfully. In his interview with BBC2, Fun To imagine, he shares his belief that there are no miracle people — anyone can learn to understand complex topics like quantum mechanics. The Feynman Technique is a test of deep understanding. As the saying goes: "If you can't explain it simply, then you don't understand it well enough." Feynman is often quoted saying "the first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool." This thinking is at the core of the technique. The goal of teaching to learn, is not that it will increase the stakes, but rather that it will show you what you don't know you don't know. Then you can ask more questions and update your model of the world. For the curious person, and the lifelong learner, The Feynman Technique is an everyday tool for understanding.
