Kaku M Moores FULL

Give yourself the gift of knowledge — subscribe to Big Think Edge: http://bit.ly/bigthinkedge - In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore observed that the number of transistors placed in an integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years, meaning computing power doubles while the size of devices shrink. This is known as Moore's law. - IBM was king of the heap in the 1950s, says physicist Michio Kaku, however it failed to read Moore's law as a sign that supercomputers would be replaced by smart phones — handheld devices that contain more computing power than NASA at the time of the Moon landing. - Microsoft rose up in IBM's ashes by predicting the age of personal computing, but they too failed to account for an exponential change: the internet. The next revolution is 5G and AI, and companies who are setting themselves up for that future will be the ones who rise to the top. Does our society incentivize disinformation? | Daniel Schmachtenberger

Give yourself the gift of knowledge — subscribe to Big Think Edge: http://bit.ly/bigthinkedge - Disinformation is rampant in human behavior, from ancient tribes hiding sources of water and gold from one another, to poker players bluffing and soccer players faking. Information is strategic. - The current information ecology is controlled by large tech companies whose goals may be radically different from the goals of the individuals using the platforms. - When it comes to critical issues like climate change, nuclear weapons stocks, and even foreign interference in U.S. elections, there is very little clear information, which impedes our decision making—that information scarcity is devastating when our survival as a species hangs in the balance. Examining Facebook and the case for privacy | Rita Gunther McGrath

Give yourself the gift of knowledge — subscribe to Big Think Edge: http://bit.ly/bigthinkedge - Facebook has been in plenty of hot water lately with user data scandal. - Columbia Business School professor Rita Gunther McGrath says the early warning signs were there when considering the social media platform's business model and attitude toward user privacy. - When users don't understand the extent of content ownership, and the platform they're using is willing to abuse that trust, a lot can go wrong. Michael Pollan on writing: What illuminates a story?

When it comes to writing a story, it's important to find a way to have an experience that will illuminate the narrative for readers — that is, an experience that fills you, the writer, with wonder and gives you a fresh take on things. A good way to make a nonfiction story rich is by tackling the subject with different lenses, by circling it from different points of views. Good storytelling is about taking readers on a journey. This said, instead of leading with your conclusion, begin from the time when you were naive about the subject at hand, and, as you relay the different things you learn, you will help your readers, in a down-to-earth way, move toward knowing more, too.
